product description

How to Grow Bean Seeds – Blue Lake Pole FM1K from Seed

Pole beans can be started indoors, but they perform best when sown directly after the final spring frost. Sow 2-3 seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Whether direct sowing or transplanting, thin out the strongest seedlings to every 6-8 inches in the garden as the true leaves establish. Pole beans require immediate trellis support as seedlings will start vining as soon as true leaves emerge. Plants benefit from a top layer of mulch to help cool the soil and roots. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers, as they cause excessive vegetative growth with minimal bean pod production.

Seeds can be sown in a single row or in widely spaced rows. Use a trellis or pole to support their upright growth habit by placing it next to where the seed is planted.

Blue Lake FM1K Pole Beans in the Vegetable Garden

Blue Lake beans are renowned worldwide for their reliability, disease resistance, flavor, and high yields. This variety is essentially the pole version of the famous bush type widely planted for the canning industry. If you enjoy Kentucky Wonder beans, you’ll be impressed by Blue Lake! These bright green beans are straight and reach up to 7 inches long, perfect for those who prefer not to bend over to pick beans but still want the high yield of a bush bean.

Harvesting Blue Lake FM1K Pole Beans

Most varieties of pole beans are ready to harvest about 70-80 days from sowing or when the pods are 3-5 inches long. Harvest often to encourage fruiting and to ensure pods do not dehydrate on the vine. While some pods may pull cleanly from the vine, use a knife or shears for more fibrous pods to avoid damaging the plant. Like many garden crops, pole beans are believed to be best harvested in the morning for optimal sugar content.
