product description

Growing California Poppy Seeds – Mission Bells

Mission Bells California poppy seeds are frost tolerant and can be sown directly outdoors in either late fall or early spring. These seeds exhibit a wildflower growth habit and can be broadcast similarly.

For easier visibility during sowing, blend 1 part Mission Bells California poppy seeds with 5 parts sand, then lightly rake and tamp the mixture into the soil. For the earliest spring blooms, start the seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the final frost date and transplant them outdoors once conditions are suitable.

To plant, sow 2-3 Mission Bells California poppy seeds ¼” deep and 8″ apart in average, loamy, and well-drained soil under full sun. Alternatively, you can broadcast the seed-sand mix directly onto the soil.

These poppies thrive in cool summers and are not suited for high humidity and intense summer heat. Ensure the planting area is well-drained and avoid overly wet conditions to prevent root rot, powdery mildew, and botrytis fungus.

Growth and Maintenance:

  • Germination Period: 56-70 days
  • Height: 12 inches tall
  • Spread: 8-12 inches
  • Bloom Size: 2-3 inch blooms

Mission Bells California poppies are low-maintenance and do not have serious pest or disease issues, making them ideal for novice gardeners. They produce stunning 2-3 inch blooms in a mix of peach, rose, canary, magenta, white, and bronze, adding vibrant color to any garden.

About California Poppy:

Eschscholzia californica, commonly known as the California poppy, is native to the cool and moderate regions of the western United States and Mexico. It has been the official state flower of California since 1903. Natural rolling meadows in Colusa and San Luis Obispo counties are home to breathtaking displays of this iconic golden-orange poppy. The genus Eschscholzia honors Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, a pioneering Baltic German naturalist and entomologist who explored California and the Pacific Northwest in the early 19th century.

Variety and Uses:

If you find it hard to choose among the various beautiful wildflower variants, the Mission Bells mix offers a delightful combination of semi-double blooms in white, gold, orange, and red. These flowers make a stunning accent for any garden or can be used for drought-tolerant mass plantings. They are also suitable for container gardening and readily re-seed, ensuring a continuous display of cheerful blooms year after year.
