Growing Pumpkin Seeds – Jack O Lantern from Seed
Sun and Soil Requirements
Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins thrive in full sun and warm conditions, similar to gourds or cucumbers. They prefer composted, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct Sowing: Plant seeds directly after the last spring frost. Sow 2-3 seeds, 1 inch deep, on 8-10 inch tall mounds spaced 5-6 feet apart.
- Indoor Sowing: For an earlier start, begin seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1 inch deep per cell.
Germination and Transplanting Seeds germinate in 4-10 days. Transplant seedlings to well-drained soil, spaced to accommodate their long, heavy vines.
Fertilization and Maintenance Fertilize plants every 3 weeks. As pumpkins develop, pinch off vines and flowers to focus energy on producing the largest, healthiest pumpkins.
Ripening and Harvesting Pumpkins are ripe when the stem is solid and the rind is tough enough to resist piercing by a fingernail. Harvest small to medium pumpkins in 90-100 days, and larger varieties a few weeks later. Clip pumpkins from the vine, leaving about 4 inches of stem. Cure pumpkins in the sun for 10-14 days to extend their shelf life by up to 3 months.
