Growing Pumpkin Seeds – Sugar Pie from Seed
Sun and Soil Requirements Sugar Pie pumpkins are a full sun winter squash that thrives in the heat, trailing and vining like a gourd or cucumber. They require composted, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct Sowing: Plant seeds directly after the final spring frost. Sow 2-3 seeds 1 inch deep on 8-10 inch tall mounds spaced 5-6 feet apart.
- Indoor Sowing: For an earlier start, begin seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1 inch deep per cell.
Germination and Transplanting Seeds germinate in 4-10 days. Once sprouted, transplant seedlings into composted, well-drained soil, spaced to accommodate their long, heavy vines.
Fertilization and Maintenance Fertilize plants every 3 weeks. As pumpkins begin to develop, pinch off vines and flowers to direct energy toward producing the largest, healthiest pumpkins.
Ripening and Harvesting Pumpkins are ripe when the stem is solid and the rind is tough enough to resist piercing by a fingernail. Most small to medium pumpkins are ready to harvest 90-100 days from sowing, while larger varieties may require a few extra weeks. Clip pumpkins from the vine, leaving about 4 inches of stem intact. Allow them to cure in the sun for 10-14 days, which will extend their shelf life by up to 3 months.
Sugar Pie Pumpkins in the Vegetable Garden
Planting Ensure ample space and good circulation for the large vines. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, and give the pumpkins plenty of room to grow—8-12 feet is ideal.
Growth Characteristics Sugar Pie pumpkins grow to be a little over 6 inches in diameter and are bright orange. They feature a fine-grained, sweet flesh perfect for baking.
Multiple Uses These pumpkins are ideal for both ornamental and culinary purposes. The flesh is excellent for making mouthwatering pies, soups, and pumpkin cheesecake. They are also great for canning and can be stored for months.
